4 Things You Need to Know About Theresa May

While Theresa May contuse her march up to 10, Downing Street here are a few quick facts that will help us get to know her better.

  1. She graduated in geography and worked for the Bank of England before being MP.

Theresa May’s maiden name is Theresa Brasier. She graduated with a major in geography from Oxford University. She proceeded to work at the Bank of England till the mid-1980s. Then, she served as a Tory councillor and was a financial consultant for the Association for Payment Clearing Services. In 1997, she was elected as MP for Maidenhead.

  1. People often draw parallels to German chancellor Angela Merkel.

Both May and Merkel are well-known for their steely grit and cautious nature in doing what they have to do. Both these ladies’ fathers were Protestant clergymen and grew up in a familial environment which held public service in high regard. They are both equally in love with alpine skiing.

  1. Benazir Bhutto, the ex-PM of Pakistan introduced her to her husband.

The Mays met at a Tory student disco and were introduced to each other by their mutual friend Benazir Bhutto. Ms Bhutto served two terms as PM of Pakistan before being assassinated in 2007. The couple were married in 1980 and don’t have children. Theresa has called her husband, Philip May, her “rock” – as her father and mother passed away within months of their wedding.

  1. She probably holds the record for being the longest-serving home secretary.

Theresa May was appointed as home secretary in May 2010 and she has stayed in her seat till her climb to No 10. Despite the job regarded as being one of the most complex in the cabinet, she has been at it only to be beaten by Labour’s James Ede who served between 1945 and 1951. May is only a month away and she could easily break his record.
