Upcoming Star Wars VR Film will Star Darth Vader

The Sith Lord rises

Darth Vader, the antagonist of the Star Wars film series and one of the most famous characters in film history, will soon meet fans in a virtual avatar.

Star Wars collaboration

A collaboration between George Lucas’s ILMxLAB and famed Hollywood director and producer David S. Goyer has been announced in the VR space with the fearsome Sith Lord appearing in his first virtual reality experience. A teaser for the project has already been published which reveals the menacing silhouette of Darth Vader outlined against the dark background of an unnamed planet, believed to be Mustafar, where Vader was born.

VR ambassador

Director Goyer described Darth Vader as the perfect ambassador to usher the Star Wars universe into the VR space. Although no details are available about the story that will be used in the feature, or what role Darth Vader has within it, it has been speculated that the narrative will deal with Vader’s origins and rise to power.

Not a video game

Goyer has clarified that the VR feature will not be in the form of a video game, but will use VR technology as a storytelling device to further expand the Star Wars Universe. The project will focus on telling a story that can only be told through virtual reality, in a way that is exclusive to the Star Wars realm in a cinematic manner.

After Trials of Tatooine

The new project is the next in line feature released by ILMxLab’s after ‘Trials of Tatooine’, another VR project that was set in George Lucas’s famed universe and gave the participant the opportunity to wield a light saber and engage in battle with storm troopers to protect the Millennium Falcon. Although ‘Trials of Tatooine’ was only made available at trade shows and conventions so far, Lucasfilms confirmed that the feature will be available on streaming service HTC Vive from July 18.
